Mega Manufacturing Zones to Replace SEZs

NEW DELHI, Dec. 13 in accordance with the National Manufacturing Policy (NMP) that was cleared in October, the Central government has asked states with surplus land banks to consider setting up mega industrial zones.

“States that have surplus land, including government-owned land and defunct industrial areas, could benefit by setting up dedicated industrial and manufacturing units under the new policy,” said Mr. P. K. Chaudhary, Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, in a communiqué to state Chief Secretaries.

To be known as National Industrial and Manufacturing Zones (NIMZs), these zones will be planned as townships with state-of-the-art infrastructure and self-regulation through a SPV. NIMZs will be different from SEZs in terms of size, level of infrastructure planning and laws regarding regulatory procedures and exit polices.
