India Pips China in Export Growth Rate: WTO

NEW DELHI, Aug. 26 India has pipped China in export growth rate, recording a jump of 16.1 per cent in 2011, in turn topping the list of all major trading countries in the world, a World Trade Organization (WTO) report said recently.

The WTO report of 2012 shows that India had the fastest export growth among major trading countries in 2011, with shipments surging 16.1 per cent, followed by China at 9.3 per cent.

It has been a huge fall for China, which had topped the list in 2010 with a shipment growth rate of 28.4 per cent, with India recording 22 per cent.

Exports believe that the focus on diversification of export markets has given a fillip to the country’s shipments.

Echoing a similar view, Mr K.T. Chacko, Director of the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), said the diversification of markets to the Middle East, South-East Asia and China had benefited Indian exports.

Mr M. Rafeeque Ahmed, President of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (Fieo), too concurred with the view.
