DGFT Told to Stop Sugar Export Registrations

There have been cancellations even in registrations already contracted as prices are more remunerative in the domestic market than abroad, sources said.

MUMBAI, Oct. 15 The Ministry of Food has directed the Directorate-General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) to stop further registration of sugar exports. However, the decision is yet to be notified.

Under the current policy, sugar exports are not restricted.

According to sources, exporters will be allowed to honour commitments for registrations made until September 30.

There have been cancellations even in registrations already contracted as prices are more remunerative in the domestic market than abroad, sources said.

The Food Ministry has pegged India’s sugar production for the 2012-13 season at 23.5 million tonnes (mt), as against 26.2 mt last year.
